REVIEW: FUNDAMENTAL LA

Sandwiches have been the muse for great poets (true, Shel Silverstein).  They have been the principal cause for murder (true, a pending case in Cincinnati involving a meatball sandwich which lead to not one but two deaths).  And sandwiches have helped start wars (true, World War I, which left thirty-five million dead).  So is it a surprise The Monster searches far and wide for delicious sandwiches?  And he has found one…

Fundamental LA resides in a narrow space on Westwood Boulevard just south of Wilshire.  The Monster has been looking forward to his visit and samples a salad (eh) and a brownie (blah) but he’s not going to waste anymore time writing about that nor spend much space devoted to the order-at-the-counter-and-take-a-seat-in-the-spare-but-hip-space.  He could laud the team that has worked at such esteemed restaurants as Cyrus, Per Se and Melisse.  Instead, read on to find out about a sandwich worthy of the gods…

Because what any sandwich loving person will do is stop reading shortly and get themselves over to Fundamental LA and eat a chicken torta with heirloom tomato, lettuce, cotija, crema, pickled jalapenos, and guac on bollilo bread.

It’s beautiful and messy and true to a lovely sandwich both complex and at the same time simple.  It’s new and unique with eat bite depending on which of the ingredients you happen to shove into your mouth that will be spread wider than the Grand Canyon trying desperately to cram everything in as fast as possible.  You will sheepishly look to your cohorts with dribbles falling this way and that and want to explain that you can no longer contain yourself but then like Pavlov’s dogs you will hear the siren’s call and once again begin your sloppy lovefest.  It’s pulled chicken…it’s piles of fresh vegetables….it’s gooey and creamy and cheesy sauces and spreads…it’s a perfectly paired bread…with jicama and pickles to slather on as you wish…

It’s just that f-ing good.

Why go?  You shouldn’t have even gotten this far…

Monster rating: 4 ½/5 Monsters (half Monster deducted for the overly chewie brownie)
