A hole in the wall in West LA, Habayit is a kosher Israeli restaurant and catering service and perhaps the only place on the Westside to eat a completely tref-free meal from the menu’s top to bottom.
The Monster is excited to go to town on a delicious meal. The din of the room is split between English and Hebrew. It’s about 50/50 with the yarmulkes in here. It’s about 90/10 Jew. Wonder if my dining companion today realizes he is a lone minority.
The Monster starts off with warm pita, hummus and a spicy green (jalapeno- based?) spread along with some falafel. The hummus could use a little kick from lemon but the pita is thick and the falafel (green on the inside and bursting with herbed flavor) are just about perfect.
Then the stuffed (boneless) chicken comes with fries and salad. This is a special of the day and the waiter (owner?) definitely approves of the order.
The chicken is moist and filled with earthy vegetables. The fries are workable which means by the end of the meal none are left. The cucumber and tomato salad comes alive with a squirt of lemon. It’s a huge lunch and The Monster finishes it all. Wheelbarrow will be the means of transpo home.
Service is friendly and fast. There is a lot for parking (though it is small and can be a tight squeeze to find a space).
Why go? It’s a little room like this that could end Mideast turmoil.
