This is the joint. Ever since the Detroit Rock City trip was in the works a stop at Slow’s Bar B Q became a 100% certainty.
All the mentions of decor and service and blah blah takes a backseat for a sec. Because here is The Monster’s monster order…
To start split pea and okra fritters with sassy dipping sauce and pickle garnish. BBQ wings, marinated, rubbed and smoked.
Next up, Chicken Strut. Half an Amish chicken heavily seasoned and smoked low and slow along with Alabama farm raised blackened catfish in fluffy corn meal “tempura” with creole remoulade.
Sides shall be mac-n-cheese and waffle fries with Hoffman’s cheddar.
If there is room for dessert, ah man, there won’t be room for dessert. When you check it out you’ll be smarter and save some room.
Back to Slow’s. Edge of burnt-out Detroit, it’s the hip, music jamming spot for locals and tourists alike. A huge menu of artisan style BBQ, this isn’t back porch eats but rather the gentrified crowd looking to get messy. All the food comes dry, dress it up how you like with one of four sauces: sweet, spicy, NC (vinegar based) and apple. Full bar, ton of beers, nice patio.
Just take a look at these pictures and decide for yourself on Slow’s:
Fritters are phenomenal. Sassy sauce needs more sass. That’s ok, they have four BBQ sauces to chose from as well. The pickle garnish is a perfect compliment.
Smoky, tender and meaty wings. Delicious, wish more came with the order because The Monster is a piglet.
Huge side of mac n’ cheese is endorsed by your doctor.
Doc also recommends more cheese slathered over your waffle fries.
Why go? You have eyes.
