The great Peruvian food search continues for The Monster. In this edition he hits Con Sabor a Peru, a tiny space off Venice Boulevard in a strip mall you’d pass a million times and never look at twice. In a neighborhood you’ll be driving through to go somewhere else.
The room doesn’t inspire much confidence. The menu looks exactly like every other Peruvian restaurant in LA. The service is friendly enough but how is the food? It just so happens to be pretty great.
From the open kitchen you’ll spy the chef hard at work as the server sends over some crusty bread and aji to start you off. It burns your mouth in the great way it should. You’ll order the camaron saltado and the roast chicken with rice, beans and salad.
You’ll wait patiently as your stomach begins to grumble and the delicious smells have you salivating. You’ll read about how the chef began his culinary adventures in Lima but also spent time in Japan. You’ll wish you ordered some ceviche. And some arroz chaufa. That sounds wonderful.
And then the food arrives. Nice sized portions for the price. You don’t know where to start. You manhandle the food with a huge smile on your face. The shrimp and onions and tomatoes and fries are a majestic combination. The chicken is crisp on the outside, juicy and wonderful within.
You realize you have to come back to try some of the fish dishes. And the soups. They have so many that sound amazing. Damn, the entire menu looks great.
And you are happy. Because in the least likely of places you’ve discovered another great new LA find.
Why go? You love the flavors of Peru…
