REVIEW: MARISCOS JALISCO

People flip out over Mariscos Jalisco.  Yelp raves.  Jonathan Gold loves.  LA proclaims the tacos the best in the city in competition.  It’s an eleven-year old eastside truck whose fried shrimp tacos are revered by so many that they seemingly out to be proffered with golden halos above their fresh avocado, tomato and onion topping.

Did The Monster miss something?

Normally anything fried immediately becomes a Monster favorite.  He has said before if you fry an old shoe he will gladly and lovingly eat it.  And it’s not that these tacos aren’t good.  They are.  They just aren’t great.

After the first taco The Monster seeks out some hot sauce because while they taste fresh they don’t taste all that transcendent.  These might even be the best fried shrimp tacos in LA…

…and herein is the rub, this is one case where perhaps frying actually works against the flavor of the dish.  These tacos are hard shelled, filled with fried shrimp and topped with the above-referenced vegetables.  But something seems to be lost in translation.

They are crunchy on the outside, soften toward the middle and are a total bargain at $1.50 per.  But for The Monster, angels don’t sing when he takes a bite.

For his money he’ll head down the street to Mariscos 4 Vientos.

Why go?  You know something The Monster doesn’t.
