REVIEW: AREPAZO

What exactly is Arepazo?  Because it isn’t tapas.  It can bill itself as such but anyone who has spent time in Spain right well knows the menu only bears a passing resemblance to tapas and the food even less so.  This is no Quimet i Quimet.  Also billed as a Latin Grill, The Monster has another name for it…

Hodge-podge.  Is that a bad thing?

At first glance this restaurant/bar in Gahanna (the original is on Pearl Street) isn’t all that attractive. It’s a hodge-podge of style (or lack thereof).

As for the menu, you’ll find Cuban wraps, Caribbean crab cakes and Peruvian lomo saltado. Definition of hodge-podge.

The Monster takes a wide swath at the menu and prays to the hodge-podge gods.

What he finds is a confused restaurant that occasionally gets things right.

The Venezuelan empanaditas (beef, chicken and black beans/cheese) prove decent as do the over-cooked camarones al ajillo while the Peruvian ceviche should be skipped by anyone who knows what it should taste like. The tapas portion of he menu does not inspire much confidence.

The fish tacos however, while huge and unwieldy, what with breaded cod, lettuce, corn salad, chipotle sauce, avocado and mojito, taste pretty damn good.  It’s cooking by theory of throw enough together (hodge-podge) and it just might work. And in this case it does.

Really, Arepazo is exactly what one should expect to find in Gahanna.  A restaurant that works well enough as long as you’re not looking for authenticity.

Why go? It’s closer than Spain.
