The Monster, Chi-Town bound for his Northwestern reunion and the first stop is Bangers and Lace for some southern inflected/English combo gastro fare and cocktails a plenty.
It’s rocking on this night, loud music piercing the skull, pretty Wicker Park-ites out on the town. The Monster approves.
Love at first site with the Po’boy, beer battered seafood sausage, spicy remoulade, lettuce, onion, aji, New England style roll. And how about some corn, deep fried sweet corn, spiced mayonnaise, red chile, cotija cheese. That sounds about perfect.
Now, service may not be a strong suit here, especially when the place is jammed. But the open air feel, the huge beer list, the crafted cocktails and the menagerie of stuffed animals lends the place a hip factor that is undeniable. Wicker Park was just getting its footing when The Monster lived in town and now it is a full blown destination of cool.
When the food arrives there is no denying it is tasty. Tons of flavor going on here and the rest of the menu looks equally appealing (wish there was room for the duck BLT, alas). On the healthy meter it is a fail but that’s okay, you can eat salad some other time.
After one last cocktail it’s time to call it a night. Good to be back in Chicago.
Why go? Reunions.
